Diversity and Inclusion
At Matheson, we are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace where all of our colleagues and their contributions and perspectives are valued and respected. We are committed to embedding diversity and inclusion into everything we do. This is our Cara Commitment.
Our Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) Commitment honours the memory of our former colleague and friend, Cara O’Hagan. Cara was a mentor and role model who spearheaded many of the firm’s diversity and inclusion initiatives. It is only fitting that our commitment will honour her and continues to build on the important work she started.
Cara O'Hagan
Our Cara Commitment is to:
- attract, engage, develop and empower diverse talent;
- build diverse and inclusive teams that deliver innovative solutions to our clients and for our business;
- further embed our core values of Respect, Diversity and Partnership into our culture;
- partner with our clients and community to contribute to wider diversity and inclusion initiatives; and
- be an inclusive workplace where all Matheson employees feel that they belong and can bring their whole self to work.
Diversity is a core value at Matheson and building a diverse and inclusive workplace where all personnel thrive is a key strategic business priority for the firm. Our Cara Commitment is the roadmap for the firm’s D&I strategy with the initial focus on the core areas of multiculturalism and social mobility; gender; generational; family and working parents; and promoting greater LGBTQ+ and disability inclusion. The delivery of this strategy is our D&I Promise.

In recognition of our people-focussed D&I strategy and practices, the Irish Centre for Diversity awarded Matheson its Investors in Diversity Gold Standard. Matheson was the first organisation in Ireland to receive this award, and is the only law firm in Ireland to hold D&I Gold accreditation.
Law Society of Ireland's Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Charter
Matheson has also underlined its commitment to supporting diversity and inclusion by recently becoming a signatory to the Law Society of Ireland's Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion ("GEDI") Charter. Signatories to the GEDI Charter commit to treating all individuals and groups of individuals fairly and equally. Mental Health and Wellbeing
Our Commitment is supported by our Wellbeing and Mental Health Programme. At Matheson, our people are our greatest competitive advantage, and supporting their physical and mental wellbeing is a key priority for the firm.
Matheson is a signatory to the Mindful Business Charter, which is a set of best practices and behavioural principles to tackle and reduce avoidable stress in the workplace. The principles govern both the way that organisations operate internally, and also the way in which organisations interact bilaterally. Matheson has also become a signatory to the Law Society of Ireland’s Professional Wellbeing Charter. Open to solicitor firms, in-house solicitors and public sector solicitors, signatories to the Law Society of Ireland’s Professional Wellbeing Charter are committed to improving leadership and championing behaviours, skills and practices which promote and enable professional wellbeing in the workplace.
Our Responsibility
We believe that it is everyone’s responsibility to foster a diverse and inclusive workplace. This is why our Diversity and Inclusion committee includes representatives from across the firm who champion diversity and drive our Cara Commitment.
